Is It True That You Can’t Wear High Heels On A Plane?
I have a short two hour flight from Sydney next week, and I’ve heard that you can’t wear high heels on a plane. Is true?
If so, can you go barefoot? We recently moved states and none of my non-heels have arrived yet.

This is a leftover from the ’60s when women in spiked heels were causing floor damage to airliners, because the tiny contact area of the heels was imposing an unanticipated large stress on the floor. (a 120 lb woman putting her weight on a 0.15 square inch heel generates an 800 lb load on the floor)
that today’s high heels are larger in contact area, reducing the stress on the floor, and the floors have been strengthened to deal with the loads.
I am told (not wearing them myself
Airplane carpets are not the cleanest of areas, and I would not go barefoot, and it is likely the airline will prohibit it, since there are a lot of ways to injure your foot under and around the seat.
FYI, pax are required to remove ALL shoes before using an escape slide.
EDIT – Ludwig, before you demonstrate your ignorance, perhaps you should spend two minutes doing some research:
“The pointy heels tore carpets and scarred solid flooring; by the late 1950s airlines and some buildings had actually banned the heels.”
“A pair of platform stiletto-heeled shoes. First developed in the 1950s, the stiletto was a menace to women’s bodies and the surfaces on which they walked.”http://www.fashionencyclopedia.com/fashi…
In the spirit of full disclosure, may I suggest you share THAT with your “design shop”, but likely they already know it if they are better informed than you.
Your sincere apology for your inaccuracy and arrogance might be accepted by those who read your remarks..
Lexigal, Jennifer is right on the money, but in light of the strange dorks giving useless answers I thought I’d second her statements for added credibility.
The bit about not wearing heels is so they don’t damage the escape slide in the event of an emergency egress. Under normal circumstances, you can wear pretty much whatever you want on your feet during the flight.
7 answers and they ALL got it wrong. It has NOTHING to do with floor loading, that one’s a hoot… I will post that one in the design shop. You will no doubt notice that some of the hottest “stewardess’s” in the history of aviation wore the highest spike heels routinely as part of their uniform for decades. I can use the “S” word because that was what they were called up until the 80’s by which time, all the sexy uniforms, boots and hot pants etc were gone and they became Flight attendants.)
Gack, the very thought of no high heels on airplanes would be enough for me to seriously reconsider my career…. but seriously… the one answer that got CLOSE…. was dealing with the escape slide… but it has nothing to do with damaging the slide… it has to do with damaging your LEG. If you go down the escape slide in heels.. it is quite possible that the heel/shoe would snag and your leg would stop and you would keep going, resulting in not only a potentially serious injury… but your sudden stop would be met with the next person coming down the slide… which if you were in 4″ heels and a short skirt would most likely be ME. It would jam up the slide and a lot of people could get hurt, or delayed getting off the plane which of course would not be good.
Actually for more than 20 years now… it has become standard practice for any and ALL passengers that are evacuating an airplane to remove their shoes period… just on the odd chance that your shoe might get caught or wedged into the side of the slide. Those slides are are hard as a ROCK. do NOT think that this is the happy hoppy slide the kids bounce on. They are incredibly hard as you can tell when you jump on one the first time. Flight crews are required to perform “Emergency training” every 12 months which means we have to climb out the windows, open the overwing exits, even shoot a little fire extinguisher at a little gas flame all to comply with our training requirements per the FAA. The first time I jumped on that slide I almost broke my butt.. it was incredibly hard… no give what so ever.
You go right ahead and wear your heels, and believe me I thank you, and all the other guys on the plane before and after the airport and on the way wherever you are going will thank you.
Its not true… and I doubt very much you’d be permitted to board barefoot, Im sure a dress code is written somewhere on your ticket fineprint.
What you maybe confused with is if the plane does go down or has an emergency landing and the inflatible slide is used, you must remove your shoes especially high heels.
All will be well.
You can !!!!!
But its advised not too…since your in the same position for ages..and your feet could get sore…due to circulation problems..
But since its a 2hr flight..i would bring my slipper socks and wear them !!
Lolz..i always wear heels…even on a 10hr flight..but i change into my slipper socks while on the plane….
Have a nice trip !!!
you can wear anything, because the aircraft cabin pressure like 7000 feet, you can wear what ever you want, also Bikini
Comin to visit me are you?
Well i’m not sure about heels but just wear snakes.
Because your aloud to wear snakes on a plane.
Thats right you moved down here….stalker much….what sort of alibi is a musical!!
You can wear high heels on an aircraft.
